Choosing Athletic Shoes

Athletic shoes are probably the most important piece of equipment you buy, it is important to find the right pair.

Many people do not realize that there are large differences in the way sports shoes support your feet. It is not good for your feet when playing football or tennis in the same trainers that you use for jogging.

Mike O'Neill of the Society of chiropodists and podiatrists said serious back, knee and hip pain, Achilles tendonitis, Shin splints (leg pain), trauma of the fingers and painful blisters are some of the conditions of people wearing ill fitting trainers face in May.

"Unfortunately, 65% of recreational sport in the United Kingdom and the women wear shoes bad for the sport of their choice," he said. "Trainers are the most important piece of fitness equipment that Never buy and change what you wear to the feet can prevent injuries."

Football
Football can put great stress on the feet, especially when playing on hard surfaces, such as artificial grass. The boots can also put pressure on the feet, and it is not unusual for a player to suffer from corns, calluses or damaged, thickened and ingrown nails. A good pair of boots and assembly are essential and should not be any sign of pressure on the feet after a match or training session.

Dancing
Dancer's feet can try a lot of wear. Common foot problems include Metatarsalgia (painful condition affecting the metatarsal region of the foot), plantar fasciitis (heel pain), Shin splints, Achilles tendonitis and calluses. Pain in the ball of the foot is common, because they contain many dance movements on the front foot after landing a jump, and the bubbles of friction may be caused by poorly fitting shoes.

Racquet Sports
It 'important for racquet sports such as tennis or squash, to choose shoes specifically for this purpose. These sports involve a lot of side-to-side movement and sneakers are not a good stability. Racket sport shoes are heavier and stiffer than running shoes, as the toes are built for stop-and-go action. Comfort should be your number one priority, and it is important to replace your sports shoes often.

Running
Running shoes are great for running and walking. Are very flexible, allowing the foot to bend every step, but are not suitable for sports like tennis that involve the strengthening of the side.

It 'a good idea to get running shoes fitted correctly with the type of foot. If they are too small, can cause blisters and black nails. There are different types of trainers on the market, you should find a specialist in retail, which will assess your foot and find the shoe that fits you.

London Marathon Store Manager Gary Malmström said it is important that you buy a shoe for your gait (that's how the foot reacts when you run). "All retailers of footwear specialists offer performance gait analysis to get you the right type of running shoe," he said.

Walks and hikes
Walking is an excellent way to start a diet fitness, while the more adventurous, go for hikes. And 'good for cardiovascular health, but it's low impact and is therefore less risk of injury.

The Ramblers Association (see useful links) offers the following advice for the best shoes for walking and excursions:

    * For short walks in urban or rural easy, you only need a good pair of comfortable shoes that will not cause blisters. The use of hard shoes that are a good fit, with plantar heel slightly raised, and "breathable" is like leather. Quality casual shoes or trainers (sneakers) with heavy soil will do.

    * If you go walking regularly, you could invest in a pair of good walking shoes or lightweight hiking shoes. These will give your feet and ankles, adequate support and be waterproof. For hiking in difficult terrain, however, quality shoes is essential.

Other Sports

    * Cross-trainers are stiffer, provide more support for side to side movements, and can be used in a variety of activities.

    * Sport Shoes, ideal for basketball, netball and so on, giving a combination of flexibility and support on the side.

    * Fitness Footwear combine flexibility, support and cushioning to absorb impact and reduce the shock to the feet. They are ideal for aerobics.
